Recently I have been preoccupied with how a painting of an object or a place can convey a sense of presence through absence. The books, open or shut, left behind somewhere, on a chair, or a table top, allude to the person who that book belonged to. Likewise the shadow figures suggest the memory of a human presence passing through, while a shadow of the light on a sofa makes more significant the space left vacant by someone.
